In a major development that could shift the trajectory of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has issued a stark warning: the US-Ukraine Peace Deal could be abandoned if negotiations do not progress soon. Speaking at a press conference in Paris following a new round of talks with European and Ukrainian officials, Rubio stressed the urgency of reaching a breakthrough.
“We are now reaching a point where we need to decide whether this is even possible or not,” Rubio told reporters. “Because if it’s not, then I think we’re just going to move on. It is not our war. We have other priorities to focus on.”
The next round of negotiations, expected to take place in London next week, will be critical. Rubio’s statement indicates a growing impatience within the Trump administration, which has been struggling to finalize a US-Ukraine Peace Agreement since early 2025.
While Rubio emphasized the gravity of the moment, he remained cautiously optimistic, calling the Paris discussions “constructive.” The talks were the first high-level meeting between US, Ukrainian, and European officials since President Donald Trump assumed office for his second term.
“Nobody rejected anything, nobody got up from the table, or walked away,” Rubio said.
Rubio, alongside Presidential Envoy Steve Witkoff, has spearheaded US diplomatic efforts. Notably, Witkoff has reportedly met with Russian President Vladimir Putin three times in recent months, including earlier rounds of negotiation in Saudi Arabia.
The Trump administration has faced mounting criticism from European allies, particularly due to its ambiguous stance towards Moscow. However, Rubio claimed that Germany, France, and the UK have played a “positive” role in recent talks.
“The UK, France, and Germany can assist us in moving the ball on this,” Rubio said.
One of the major outcomes of this ongoing negotiation phase is the progress toward a US-Ukraine Minerals Deal, tied intricately to the peace efforts. President Trump proudly announced on Thursday:
“We have a minerals deal.”
Ukraine’s Economy Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko later confirmed that a memorandum of intent had been signed with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. This deal is expected to grant the United States access to Ukraine’s rich deposits of lithium and rare earth elements, vital for the technology and defense sectors.
The deal had previously stalled due to tensions during an Oval Office meeting involving Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. However, the renewed cooperation suggests a possible breakthrough in economic ties—even as the peace deal remains fragile.
“This agreement will bring investments, infrastructure development, and long-term economic cooperation,” Svyrydenko said.
The minerals deal highlights a growing focus on strategic resource diplomacy, as both nations look for mutual benefits amid geopolitical uncertainty.
4. Russia-Ukraine Conflict Escalates
Despite diplomatic movements, violence on the ground continues. On Friday, Russian airstrikes hit Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, killing at least one and injuring more than 60 civilians. Mayor Ihor Terekhov confirmed four attacks using cluster munitions in residential zones.
Meanwhile, a drone strike in Sumy targeted a local bakery, killing a customer and injuring staff. Grim photographs from the scene showed Easter cakes covered in debris.
The city had just witnessed a deadly missile strike during Palm Sunday celebrations, leaving 34 dead.
More tragedy struck on April 4 in Zelenskyy’s hometown of Kryvyi Rih, where a missile barrage killed 20 people, including nine children.
These attacks underscore Russia’s continued military aggression even as international actors push for peace. Russia has demanded that Ukraine halt military mobilization and Western nations stop supplying arms—conditions Ukraine rejects outright.
As the Trump administration weighs its next steps, observers believe that the US-Ukraine Peace Deal now hangs in the balance. Rubio hinted that a decision could be reached “within days.”
If the US steps away from the negotiations, it could significantly alter the Russia-Ukraine peace process and limit future cooperation between Washington and Kyiv. Analysts warn that US involvement is vital to prevent retaliatory action from Moscow and to maintain European stability.
Though the Trump administration continues to frame this as “not our war”, the implications of American withdrawal could be far-reaching—geopolitically and economically.
