Bollywood’s latest action film ‘Jaat’ lands in controversy. FIR filed against Sunny Deol and Randeep Hooda for allegedly hurting Christian sentiments. Learn about the box office performance, ratings, and more.
The Jaat movie controversy has taken Bollywood by storm. Starring popular actors like Sunny Deol, Randeep Hooda, and Vineet Kumar Singh, the film has recently been mired in a legal and religious row after a scene in the movie was alleged to have hurt Christian sentiments. This incident adds to the long list of recent controversies around freedom of expression in Indian cinema.
On April 17, 2025, an FIR was filed in Jalandhar, Punjab against Sunny Deol, Randeep Hooda, Vineet Kumar Singh, and the film’s director Gopichand Malineni under Section 299 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The case was filed after a scene from the film allegedly outraged the religious sentiments of the Christian community.
The complaint claims that a particular scene in ‘Jaat’ disrespects Jesus Christ by portraying Randeep Hooda’s character engaging in violent and intimidating behavior inside a church, specifically near the sacred pulpit and under a crucifix.
The complainant accused the makers of intentionally releasing the film during the holy month of Good Friday and Easter to incite unrest. The FIR also implicates the producers—Mythri Movie Makers and People Media Factory—arguing the timing and content were maliciously planned.
The Jaat movie controversy hinges on the claim that the filmmakers disrespected Christian traditions. The complainant stated:
“The director, writer, and producer deliberately released this film during the holy month of Good Friday and Easter so that the Christians get angry, riots break out in the entire country, and unrest is spread.”
In the contentious scene, Randeep Hooda is shown standing above the altar, engaging in intimidating actions, which many have viewed as blasphemous and disrespectful.
Such allegations, if proven true, could have serious legal implications under India’s laws protecting religious sentiments.
Despite the Jaat movie controversy, the film was released on April 10, 2025, in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu languages. The movie had a strong start at the box office, collecting over ₹32 crore in its opening weekend. Its performance so far:
This makes it one of the most commercially successful releases for Sunny Deol post ‘Gadar 2’.
Reactions to ‘Jaat’ have been polarized. While many fans lauded the high-octane action sequences and Randeep Hooda’s gripping performance, others were disturbed by the religiously sensitive scene.
Online movie review platforms show the following ratings:
The film has garnered positive reviews for its action choreography and dramatic performances, though the controversy has dampened its otherwise successful run.
Adding fuel to the buzz, Sunny Deol confirmed a sequel titled ‘Jaat 2’, expected to go on floors later in 2025. Deol, in a recent press release, stated:
“The story has just begun. We’re going bigger with ‘Jaat 2’.”
However, with the current backlash, it remains to be seen whether the sequel will face heightened scrutiny from both audiences and the censor board.
The Jaat movie controversy underscores the delicate balance filmmakers must maintain between creative expression and religious sensitivity in India. While the movie has enjoyed commercial success, the legal challenges and community outrage may impact its long-term reception and the release of future installments.
The incident is a reminder of the fine line between storytelling and offense, especially in a culturally diverse country like India.
