The IPL’s mega auction occurs every three years, allowing franchises to retain a limited number of players—typically up to six. This system aims to maintain competitive balance by redistributing talent across teams. However, it also means that franchises often have to release key players, disrupting team dynamics.
Langer’s Perspective on the Auction System
Langer, speaking on the Beyond 23 Cricket Podcast, expressed his frustration:
“Last year we had 25 players, we retained 5, the rest 20 went back in the pool. Then you have this mega auction, and then you start all over again every three years. I don’t know any other sport where this happens.”
He emphasized the difficulty in building a cohesive team culture when the core group is frequently disrupted.

LSG had to make significant changes due to the auction rules. Notably, they released former captain KL Rahul, who was subsequently picked up by Delhi Capitals. To fill the leadership void, LSG acquired Rishabh Pant for a record ₹27 crore, making him the most expensive player in IPL history.
